Welcome to Books & Coffee.
Love Beauty Thrive’s new monthly book feature series.
I’m so glad you could join me here, in the experience of impactful storytelling, growth, and meaningful conversation, one book (and perfect cup of coffee) at a time.
Here’s what I’m reading this month.
“An intimate, powerful, and inspiring memoir by the former first lady of the United States.
In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America—the first African American to serve in that role—she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.
In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same.” – www.amazon.com.
I’ve had this book on my shelf since its release two years ago.
After anxiously awaiting its publication, I’ve picked up Becoming (2018) to start reading – only to put it back on my shelf – more times than I can count. It’s such a monumental memoir, that I just couldn’t read it on the fly (as I often do with books).
This book deserved presence and it’s own dedicated time. In the chaos and uncertainty of the current world, there’s no question it’s now the time to read and be inspired by this powerhouse bestseller, from one of the most inspirational, change-making women.
I hope you will join me this August in reading Love Beauty Thrive’s first monthly book feature, Becoming, by former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama.
ON THE CHARTS
Becoming is an Oprah’s Book Club pick, #1 New York Times bestseller, and was the best selling book in the United States in 2018 (selling more copies than any other book published in the US).
BECOMING, A GUIDED JOURNAL (2019)
If you’re inspired by Becoming, the guided journal may help you to reflect on your own story, discover your voice and be empowered by your own personal journey of becoming. I have this on my shelf too.

Do you love podcasts? The Michelle Obama Podcast launched last week on Spotify. A new show exploring this tough year and hoping to spark challenging conversation, it features Michelle discussing current topics with important people in her life. Her husband and former President of the United States, Barack Obama was her first guest. Will you tune in?
Need more Becoming? Check out the recent critically acclaimed documentary on Netflix, giving a closer look at Michelle’s life, hopes and dreams.
I read with my children every night. This month, we are reading the hardcover, illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (third book of the series).
These stunningly beautiful editions of the Harry Potter books have gorgeous, full colour illustrations by award-winning artist Jim Kay (my kids are enthralled by the magical artwork).
