Oprah has said, “your home should rise up to meet you.” Does yours?
Your home is your sanctuary. But if you’re like most of us, life gets busy . . . and your house gets messy (and then you’re left feeling stressed and frustrated).
If you’re tired of an untidy or disorganized house, it doesn’t have to be that way. Getting things under control also doesn’t have to be an overwhelming job that takes days (or even hours) of your time.
We’ve outlined a quick 7 day ‘tidy and clean’ schedule to never have a messy house again (and we really mean it). Every week, do just a little each day (less than a hour).
You’ll have a beautiful, peaceful home rising up to meet you in no time.

DAY 1 – BEDROOMS
Start your week off right by focusing on bedrooms first (you’ll get better sleep all week and be more productive).
Managing clothing and closets is a bedroom priority. Sort laundry to be washed, and put all clean clothes away. Tidy and dust. Vacuum. Launder all bedding as needed. In children’s rooms, kids can tidy and put away toys.
DAY 2 – BATHROOMS
Bathrooms don’t have to take long. Grab some disinfectant wipes and get cleanin’!
Wipe down all surfaces, sinks, mirrors, and the floor. Clean the tub/shower (and under anti-slip mats). Empty garbages. Scrub toilets. Launder bath mats and towels if needed. Do you need more toilet paper or toothpaste?
DAY 3 – FLOORS, VACUUMING & STAIRS
Take care of floors and vacuuming in all other main (high traffic) areas of the house (living room, kitchen, halls, entryways, and stairs).
Is there clutter piling up on the stairs? Put it away. Vacuum the couch and other furniture, especially if you have pets. Launder any floor mats, rugs, or throws throughout your home as necessary (follow special instructions).
DAY 4 – KITCHEN
The heart of your home. As you work, make a list of any groceries/supplies (dish soap, paper towels, garbage bags, etc.) you’re running low on.
Clean out and disinfect the fridge and freezer. Straighten cupboards. Wipe down all surfaces, sinks, the stove, and inside the microwave. Launder kitchen towels, dish rags, and sponges. Take care of less frequent tasks as needed (e.g., coffee maker, oven, dishwasher).
DAY 5 – GROCERIES, ERRANDS & OTHER TASKS
Remember your list? Use today for meal planning, grocery shopping, errands, and other tasks to keep your home (and life) running smoothly.
Get groceries (putting everything away in your sparkling clean fridge and tidy cupboards). Do any banking, bills, and budgeting for the week. Need to go to the post office, book an appointment, make a return, buy a gift?
DAY 6 – OUTDOOR, VEHICLES & STORAGE
Outdoor chores, yard work, and other similar jobs can all be done today. Make it a family affair, get the kids involved!
Wash the car (and clean it out). Tidy the garage/shed. Sort the recycling and get ready for garbage day. Cut the grass. Does your storage room (or other storage areas) need some attention? What about the laundry room?
DAY 7 – DIY PROJECTS & EXTRA
Enjoy a well deserved day of rest (in your nice clean house) or tackle any other special, big projects you have on the go.
Have a bigger job like painting? Working on a DIY project? Are you building something? Need to fix or repair something around the house (or on your car)? Today is the perfect day for that. Get the kids to help.
DAILY HOME CHORES
A few extra tasks need to be done every day (in addition to your 7 day schedule) to keep your home tidy and clean. Tackle these daily.
- Dishes. Load, run, and unload the dishwasher.
- Quick tidy. Spend 5 minutes tidying up after each meal.
- Pets. Clean around food/water bowls, scoop litter, etc.
- After school responsibilities. Assign a few simple, age appropriate tasks to your kids. Teaches responsibility (and helps you out too).
- Laundry. Run a load or two of laundry. Here are ten easy ways for busy families to keep up with the laundry.
