REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK (NOVEMBER 2023)
Reese’s Book Club November 2023 pick is Maybe Next Time by Cesca Major.
A Reese’s Book Club pick, this new novel by Cesca Major is described as heartwarming, emotionally poignant and “One Day meets Groundhog Day“. Here is the publisher’s book description of Maybe Next Time.
It is an ordinary Monday and harried London literary agent Emma is flying out of the door as usual. Preoccupied with work and her ever growing to-do list, she fails to notice her lovely husband Dan seems bereft, her son can barely meet her eye, and her daughter won’t go near her. Even the dog seems sad.
She is far too busy, buried deep in her phone; social media alerts pinging; clients messaging with “emergencies”; keeping track of a dozen WhatsApp groups about the kids’ sports, school, playdates, all of it. Her whole day is frantic—what else is new—and as she rushes back through the door for dinner, Dan is still upset. They fight, and he walks out, desolate, dragging their poor dog around the block. Just as she realizes it is their anniversary and she has forgotten, again, she hears the screech of brakes.
Dan is dead.
The next day Emma wakes up… and Dan is alive. And it’s Monday again.
Emma tries desperately to change the course of fate by doing different things each time she wakes up: leaving WhatsApp, telling her boss where to get off, writing to Dan, listening to her kids, reaching out to forgotten friends, getting drunk and buying out Prada. But will Emma have the chance to find herself again, remember what she likes about her job, reconnect with her children, love her husband? Will this be enough to change the fate they seem destined for?
A moving “What if” story of what it is to be a woman in the modern world—never feeling we’re getting it quite right—about learning to slow down and appreciate life that is sure to resonate with women’s fiction readers.Maybe Next Time (2023)

OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK (CURRENT)
The current pick for Oprah’s Book Club is Let Us Descend by Jesmyn Ward (selected in mid-October 2023).
An Oprah’s Book Club pick, instant New York Times bestseller and Amazon editors’ pick in best literature and fiction, this new release is written by Jesmyn Ward (two-time National Book Award winner, youngest winner of the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction and MacArthur Fellow). A Book of the Month selection (November 2023) described as a “haunting masterpiece”, here is the publisher’s book description of Let Us Descend.
“‘Let us descend,’ the poet now began, ‘and enter this blind world.’” —Inferno, Dante Alighieri
Let Us Descend is a reimagining of American slavery, as beautifully rendered as it is heart-wrenching. Searching, harrowing, replete with transcendent love, the novel is a journey from the rice fields of the Carolinas to the slave markets of New Orleans and into the fearsome heart of a Louisiana sugar plantation.
Annis, sold south by the white enslaver who fathered her, is the reader’s guide through this hellscape. As she struggles through the miles-long march, Annis turns inward, seeking comfort from memories of her mother and stories of her African warrior grandmother. Throughout, she opens herself to a world beyond this world, one teeming with spirits: of earth and water, of myth and history; spirits who nurture and give, and those who manipulate and take. While Ward leads readers through the descent, this, her fourth novel, is ultimately a story of rebirth and reclamation.
From one of the most singularly brilliant and beloved writers of her generation, this miracle of a novel inscribes Black American grief and joy into the very land—the rich but unforgiving forests, swamps, and rivers of the American South. Let Us Descend is Jesmyn Ward’s most magnificent novel yet, a masterwork for the ages.Let Us Descend (2023)

READ WITH JENNA BOOK CLUB PICK (NOVEMBER 2023)
The Read with Jenna book club November 2023 pick is The Sun Sets in Singapore by Kehinde Fadipe.
A TODAY Show “Read with Jenna” book club pick and Amazon editors’ pick for best literature and fiction, here is the publisher’s book description of The Sun Sets in Singapore.
The Lion City has gone by many names and is famous for many things—its decadent street food, its world-class shopping, its lush gardens that burst with tropical blooms. But paradise is always hiding a snake. The Sun Sets in Singapore (2023)
For Dara, a workaholic lawyer from the UK, Singapore is opportunity. Every day, brokering deals for her firm’s wealthy clientele, she gets closer to her ultimate goal: making partner. For Amaka, a sharp-tongued banker from Nigeria, Singapore is extravagance. Gucci, Prada, Hermès—she loves nothing more than to luxuriate in the major department stores that call her name on Orchard Road. And for Lillian, a former pianist turned “trailing spouse” from the U.S., Singapore is reinvention. In a stunning apartment with 360° views, the island seems to glitter as far as the eye can see.
But complications are looming in the form of an enigmatic stranger, whose presence exposes cracks in Singapore’s beguiling façade. Dara’s ambitions mean she has no life outside the firm, and her insecurities are threatening to derail the promotion she’s spent the last six years striving for. Amaka is desperate to escape the chaos she left behind at home and hiding a spiraling shopping addiction that’s endangering her very sense of self. And while Lillian’s life may be the envy of outsiders, a new obsession is imperiling everything—and everyone—around her.
In The Sun Sets in Singapore, Kehinde Fadipe captures the richness of this metropolis through the eyes of three tenacious women, who are about to learn that unfinished history can follow you anywhere, no matter how far you run from home.

GMA BOOK CLUB PICK (NOVEMBER 2023)
The GMA Book Club November 2023 pick is Class: A Memoir of Motherhood, Hunger, and Higher Education by Stephanie Land.
A GMA Book Club pick, Class is written by Stephanie Land, a New York Times bestselling author who inspired the hit Netflix series Maid. It is both an Amazon best seller (sociology of class) and editors’ pick in best biographies and memoirs. Here is the publisher’s book description of Class.
When Stephanie Land set out to write her memoir Maid, she never could have imagined what was to come. Handpicked by President Barack Obama as one of the best books of 2019, it was called “an eye-opening journey into the lives of the working poor” (People). Later it was adapted into the hit Netflix series Maid, which was viewed by 67 million households and was Netflix’s fourth most-watched show in 2021, garnering three Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Stephanie’s escape out of poverty and abuse in search of a better life inspired millions.
Maid was a story about a housecleaner, but it was also a story about a woman with a dream. In Class, Land takes us with her as she finishes college and pursues her writing career. Facing barriers at every turn including a byzantine loan system, not having enough money for food, navigating the judgments of professors and fellow students who didn’t understand the demands of attending college while under the poverty line—Land finds a way to survive once again, finally graduating in her mid-thirties.
Class paints an intimate and heartbreaking portrait of motherhood as it converges and often conflicts with personal desire and professional ambition. Who has the right to create art? Who has the right to go to college? And what kind of work is valued in our culture? In clear, candid, and moving prose, Class grapples with these questions, offering a searing indictment of America’s educational system and an inspiring testimony of a mother’s triumph against all odds.Class (2023)

BELLETRIST BOOK CLUB PICK (NOVEMBER 2023)
The Belletrist Book Club November 2023 pick is The Premonition by Banana Yoshimoto (translated by Asa Yoneda).
A Belletrist book club pick, The Premonition is Amazon editors’ pick for best literature and fiction (and was an instant bestseller in Japan when first published in 1988). Now available in English, it is a “beautiful and heartfelt story” written by internationally beloved author Banana Yoshimoto and translated from Japanese by Asa Yoneda. Here is the publisher’s book description of The Premonition.
Yayoi, a 19-year-old woman from a seemingly loving middle-class family, has lately been haunted by the feeling that she has forgotten something important from her childhood. Her premonition grows stronger day by day and, as if led by it, she decides to move in with her mysterious aunt, Yukino.
No one understands her aunt’s unusual lifestyle. For as long as Yayoi can remember, Yukino has lived alone in an old gloomy single-family home, quietly, almost as though asleep. When she is not working, Yukino spends all day in her pajamas, clipping her nails and trimming her split ends. She eats only when she feels like it, and she often falls asleep lying on her side in the hallway. She sometimes wakes Yayoi at 2:00 a.m to be her drinking companion, sometimes serves flan in a huge mixing bowl for dinner, and watches Friday the 13th over and over to comfort herself. A child study desk, old stuffed animals—things Yukino wants to forget—are piled up in her backyard like a graveyard of her memories. The Premonition (2023)

THP READS BOOK CLUB PICK (NOVEMBER 2023)
The Happy Place Reads November 2023 book pick is What We Kept to Ourselves by Nancy Jooyoun Kim.
A THP Reads book club pick, What We Kept to Ourselves is a “timely and surprising new novel” by New York Times bestselling author Nancy Jooyoun Kim. Here is the publisher’s book description of What We Kept to Ourselves.
1999: The Kim family is struggling to move on after their mother, Sunny, vanished a year ago. Sixty-one-year-old John Kim feels more isolated from his grown children than ever before. But one evening, their fragile lives are further upended when John finds the body of a stranger in the backyard, carrying a letter to Sunny, leaving the family with more questions than ever.
1977: Sunny is pregnant and has just moved to Los Angeles from Korea with her aloof and often-absent husband. America is not turning out the way she had dreamed it to be, and the loneliness and isolation are broken only by a fateful encounter at a bus stop. The unexpected connection spans the decades and echoes into the family’s lives in the present as they uncover devastating secrets that put not only everything they thought they knew about their mother but their very lives at risk.
Both “an intricately crafted mystery and a heart-wrenching family saga” (Michelle Min Sterling, New York Times bestselling author), What We Kept to Ourselves masterfully explores what it means to dream in America. What We Kept to Ourselves (2023)

GH BOOK CLUB PICK (NOVEMBER 2023)
The GH Book Club November 2023 pick is The Comfort of Crows: A Backyard Year by Margaret Renkl.
A GH Book Club pick, The Comfort of Crows is written by beloved New York Times opinion writer and bestselling author Margaret Renkl. It is both an Amazon top new release (nature writing and essays) and editors’ pick for best biographies and memoirs. A USA Today (and national) bestseller, it’s described as “the perfect gift for nature lovers, birders, and gardeners” that includes original color art. Here is the publisher’s book description of The Comfort of Crows.
In The Comfort of Crows, Margaret Renkl presents a literary devotional: fifty-two chapters that follow the creatures and plants in her backyard over the course of a year. As we move through the seasons—from a crow spied on New Year’s Day, its resourcefulness and sense of community setting a theme for the year, to the lingering bluebirds of December, revisiting the nest box they used in spring—what develops is a portrait of joy and grief: joy in the ongoing pleasures of the natural world, and grief over winters that end too soon and songbirds that grow fewer and fewer.
Along the way, we also glimpse the changing rhythms of a human life. Grown children, unexpectedly home during the pandemic, prepare to depart once more. Birdsong and night-blooming flowers evoke generations past. The city and the country where Renkl raised her family transform a little more with each passing day. And the natural world, now in visible flux, requires every ounce of hope and commitment from the author—and from us. For, as Renkl writes, “radiant things are bursting forth in the darkest places, in the smallest nooks and deepest cracks of the hidden world.”
With fifty-two original color artworks by the author’s brother, Billy Renkl, The Comfort of Crows is a lovely and deeply moving book from a cherished observer of the natural world. The Comfort of Crows (2023)
