Coconut oil can be used to restore dry, damaged hair.
If blow drying, heat styling, and colouring (or even the weather) has left your hair dry, dull, and damaged, you might want to try an at-home coconut oil hair treatment.
Coconut oil is a simple, restorative treatment that visibly improves the health of your hair when used regularly (once or twice a week).
We’ve outlined the 6 simple steps to restoring your dry, damaged hair with coconut oil.
Let’s oil up those tresses!
Step 1. Pick Your Oil
Hair treatments can be done with many types of oil. Lightweight and better able to penetrate the hair shaft, coconut oil (organic, extra virgin) is most often recommended.
Step 2. Melt Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is typically solid at room temperature. Rub some oil (straight from the jar) between your hands until melted when you are ready to start your treatment.
Step 3. Pre-wash Treatment
Apply melted coconut oil as a pre-wash treatment to the middle and ends of dry hair, avoiding the roots (damp hair will repel the oil preventing it from penetrating the shaft).
Step 4. Time Your Treatment
Leave the treatment in your hair for 15-30 minutes (or longer). The longer your treat your hair, the more effective it will be.
Step 5. Shampoo And Condition
Shampoo the treatment out of your hair and condition as normal (use extra moisturizing or hydrating products if your hair is very dry or damaged). A second shampoo is usually not necessary unless treatment has been applied to the roots.
Step 6. Post-wash Treatment
Apply a small amount of melted coconut oil to the very ends of damp hair as a leave-in, post-wash treatment before air or blow drying.
Tame The Frizz
Coconut oil can also be used as a styling or heat protection agent. Apply a small amount to the very ends of your hair to tame frizz and protect from heat styling (use the lowest temperature setting needed to achieve your desired style).
Optional Overnight Mask
For a more intense treatment, use coconut oil as an overnight hair mask. Apply melted oil to the middle and ends of dry hair (avoid roots and hairline) and leave on overnight (protect your pillowcase). Shampoo the mask from your hair in the morning. Condition, dry, and style as normal.
